Barcelona Gráfica
America Sanchez

NEW PRICE

To produce this work, America Sanchez photographed and arranged 1,834 pieces of Barcelona urban graphic art: shop signs, door numbers, cartoons, allegories, emblems and pictograms which illustrate the uses of the city and make them legible.

In doing so, Sanchez has brought out of anonymity a multitude of spontaneous graphic artists: sign-writers, painters, engravers, sculptors, metalworkers, stained-glass workers and more. Looking at this work, Barcelona can gaze into the mirror of its anonymous graphic art to recover another element of the city's rich heritage.

America Sanchez (Buenos Aires, 1939) is graphic designer, photographer and teacher of the image. Self-taught as an artist, his early training was marked by the so-called 'Swiss School', via Josef Müller-Brockmann's book The Graphic Artist and his Design Problems. In 1965 he arrived in Barcelona, where he worked as a free-lance designer. A year later he set up his own studio, specializing in corporate identity work for bussinesses and institutions, and graphic design for exhibitions and special events. From 1967 onwards he also works as a teacher in Barcelona's Escola Eina as well as other schools and institutions.

The Bibliothèque Nationale de France, the Musée d'Aurillac, the IVAM Centre Julio González and the Museum of Fine Art in Houston have photos by him in their collections. And the Museum of Modern Art in New York also possesses examples of his graphic work. He has been awarded the Laus Prize on six occasions and the National Design Prize in 1992.
